Newsweek has published a feature on the surge of Americans claiming Luxembourgish citizenship since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, with Daniel Atz as its central source.
The piece sets out the figures: 3,574 Americans acquired Luxembourgish citizenship in the first year of Trump’s second term, the largest cohort on record, of whom 657 did so through a voluntary application. It follows a Denver applicant who obtained citizenship in March 2026 and moved to Sweden, and it tells Atz’s own story, from his great-grandmother Marguerite Kruchten, who left Luxembourg for Kansas after the First World War, to the citizenship he reclaimed in 2014 and the family he found along the way.
Atz also describes how sharply demand has grown since 2024, and adds a caution: fewer than 5 percent of applicants have real plans to live in Luxembourg, and most who do move to Europe choose Spain, Portugal or France.
